March 21st (3/21) is World Down Syndrome Day. The date 3/21 is significant in that the genetic disorder occurs when there are 3 copies of the 21st chromosome.
There are a number of ways that people in the Down syndrome community celebrate this day, two of the most common being wearing brightly colored socks or performing random acts of kindness.
Every year the organization, Down Syndrome International, selects a theme for this day. This year’s theme is “my friends, my community” and promotes inclusion. The organization wants to spread awareness about inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome by making the following points:
- People with Down syndrome must be able to enjoy full and equal rights both as children and adults.
- Inclusive environments prepare all of today’s children with and without Down syndrome for life as tomorrow’s adults.
- Inclusive environments enable adults with Down syndrome to live, work and participate with confidence.
People do many other things to spread awareness – share messages on social media, blog, even create videos. One mom created this beautiful video where Gigi makes an appearance a couple of times. We are proud to be a part of it!
